Fan Made Fallout - Demo Alpha v. 0.1 |
|
|
Good (insert relevant time zone greeting here),
Welcome to the first release of the Fan Made Fallout demo. This release is currently in Alpha form. We're calling it version 0.1. Here's some important information you need to know, then we'll post the message from our script lead on how to check things out.
1 - It's going to be rough
2 - Our dedicated, two man scripting team is working very hard to learn the skills they need to get you a demo that ... well, works. They appreciate your feedback and assistance.
3 - We're going to be constantly updating this demo version as we go. If you have comments you'd like to make, please respond to THIS posting. Likewise we will update information here with update releases so you can patch mistakes we've fixed.
4 - Thanks for coming on the ride with us .. hope you like where this goes ....
5 - Oh, and thank you to everyone over the past 7 years that have gotten us to where we are on this journey (including HVAttack8, who is our other scripter
Now, without further ado .. please see this post below by rockfx01, , our lead scripter....

Hello all,
We are still having some problems with the build due to exit grids not playing nicely (yet), but here is a zip file of the data directory which you can start testing out one of the maps with:
http://www.fanmadefallout.com/project/builds/Demo/Beta_Test_Builds/PreBeta_001/PreBetaData_001.zip
To install:
1. Rename your C\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data directory to "data.org" or "data2".
2. Extract the zip file above to C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2. It will replace the original data directory.
3. Run the Fallout2.exe executable and start a new game. After getting through the start videos, you will start at the City on the Coast Markets.
Currently this map is the only one available since the game crashes when you cross the exit grid . If anyone knows how to get the exit grids working properly, please let me know. I've followed the tutorials for exit grids but they still don't seem to work. I'll look at this more tomorrow to see if I can get it working, but if anyone is familiar with mapping, your assistance would be appreciated. You can feel free to load up the mapper with the scripts source attached at the bottom and the data directory above (note that the imarket.map is actually called "artemple.map" due to the FMF executable not yet working quite right).
I will be putting up daily builds this week with any improvements as they become available. If anyone would like to help get the map situation sorted out we would all greatly appreciate it. My expertise is definitely not mapping.
The source scripts are available below. Feel free to download it and take a look. If you find any bugs and feel like fixing them, feel free. Send me a PM with the modified code so that we can merge it into future builds. Once we get the exit grids working, there will be quite a bit more to do since there are several other quests and features scripted on the other maps. The biggest issue right now is getting to the maps where those quests are located.

Um, there's nothing on the map. No people, all the houses are empty, all the containers are empty, nothing on the ground to pick up.
I can exit all the maps without crashing. Exiting East gets me to the World Map, if I go back in I arrive at Arroyo bridge map. If I exit west I arrive in a black space and there are graphical glitches. If I exit south I arrive in the Arroyo Temple map (#1 I think), though behind the walls (in the space where there's solid earth).
EDIT:
It works for me now, I unzipped the modded Data files into the old thinking it would be the same.

I had the same thing where there was no people and only buildings. I restarted and then found people but they just started attacking me and it was pretty stupid overall. There was no dialog that I saw unless you finish the fight with about 10+ tribals with your hands and then someone talks.
I thought you guys were working towards make a really solid demo and were just dealing with tech problems at the end. I didn't realize that there actually was a lot of unfinished stuff.

Dude... with the bashing...
Are you sure you did the install right? From what I understand the first guy who had the no people/loot/buildings problem there was a user error during the install. It is after all a computer, it only does what you tell it to do. I would highly suggest re-reading the install instructions before letting the hatred fly.
Just a thought...

You obviously did not read the title of the thread "Demo Alpha v. 0.1".
This is an Alpha release because it is not yet in an acceptable state to be called a 'beta'. The initial beta should be coming very soon once the map issues are resolved (although we cannot resolve user error - it's your own responsibility to follow the install directions that are provided). Then we will continue improving on the beta for the 'official' demo 1.0 release which will require another 1-2 mos. development to get all the kinks worked out. We are making the alpha and beta builds publicly available so that those who aren't flamers can help us in finding and addressing bugs in the demo.
If you only want the fully polished and complete demo, come back in 1-2 mos when we've had time to work out all the issues that any alpha and beta software release has.

He is a great motivational tool though (emphasis on the word tool). To everyone else, thanks for sticking around with us, everyone's still working hard to bring you the FMF Demo you've been waiting for . I'm sure we'll have good news for you all real soon.

Roger that.
So I tried it out, looks really good. I did a fresh install of US V1.00 and then verified that it ran vanilla. I then followed the install steps.
1. renamed data to data2 - check
2. Extracted to specified path - check
3. ran the game -check
This first thing I noticed was the fan icon while loading (I see what you did here!), nice touch. The only people I found were Donald and the scruffy customer. I was able to ask about the jukebox and Donald let me try to repair it. I did not find any other people on the first map.
I also noticed that my character could run right through the bed in the back room of Donald's bar.
I had to go a try the exit grids even though we were told they won't work right. To the east it locked the game up but only sorta. I could still move the mouse but dragging it around just redrew the map... weird.
The exit grid to the worldmap sent me to the earth around the Temple of Trials just like sheek described a few posts up.
I did not look in to every container but the few I did sample were all empty.
I realize this is a very early demo and it looks really good, I'm not sure what we are supposed to be seeing either so I I just thought I would share what I found. I hope it helps and wanted to let ya'll know that you work is appreciated. I'll check back halfway regularly for updates to the demo, later.

Thank you for taking the time to post your experience. Every bit of feedback such as this really helps us out.
At the moment, all the chests are empty, if I'm not mistaken.
Our intention for all testers is for you to just try everything out .. pretty much like you did Bloody and let us know what you see so we can chart bugs we might not have uncovered ourselves. Right now we are working to get all the maps to attach correctly. Once we have that we'll start putting more NPCs into the mix.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Actually, there should be a couple of items on the map scattered around in, perhaps, bookshelves and ice chests... for the purposes of testing the quests on that particular map. These items will surely be moved for the final demo.
There should be a new demo today with a working west exit, although there are no npcs placed on the map to the west at the moment, we will introduce them shortly. Additionally, we will post info for our bug tracker for anyone beta testing who is interested in helping us find and address bugs in the demo.

I forgot to ask, are the buttons (in char creation and ingame toolbar) supposed to be blue? Mine were, everywhere but the main title screen.

Well, i had a little problem to install this demo, since my fallout 2 had the Restoration Project 1.2 ...
i guess its kinda obvious, but you guys should warn us that this mod only works with a clean Fallout 2 client , US 1.2 version.
Anyway, i started with no gear, close to 2 slavers. Didnt found no item on shelves or chests, and died fighting with some agressive slaves . Also i couldnt speak with no npc, and some of them had wierd names, like Script Test 3. The game buttons were blue ( unless in the main menu ) and there was a fan animation on the loading screen. BTW, only played the demo for 1 minute, didnt even explored the whole map i think.. didnt wanted to go on after the slaves killed me ;p
Now lets just wait for a further demo release...
(PS: excuse me for my bad english, not my main language)
